We all had our usual, Railroad French Toast!

Everyone was still pretty tired after breakfast so back to our rooms to take it easy.

We arrived into Albuquerque and hour early so we had quite a bit of time to kill at the station.

All of the walls at the station have these spike things on the top. I assume it is to keep people from sitting on them.

We started lunch while still in Albuquerque. There were slow orders between Albuquerque and Lamy so we went slow for a long time. It was to bring us to our final stop almost and hour late. We waited in the lower vestibule for our arrival.

We got off the train into a little rain. Nothing much, but it was nice to see some precipitation.

And we watched our train disappear…

So ends another great trip. Hopefully we can do another one next year. Thanks for sharing it with us!

After walking around for a while, we rode the Metro over to the Universal Citywalk for lunch and to look around.

After checking that place out a while, it was time to return to Los Angeles Union Station to wait for our final train, Amtrak’s Southwest Chief #4.

You might recognize this station from countless TV shows, commercials and movies.

Our train backed into the station around 5:45.

We boarded and settled in for our last ride of the trip. Soon after pulling out of the station, we went to dinner. After dinner, it was already getting dark. The boys and I went to the lounge for one more game of Monopoly on the iPad.

After I won the game, we all turned in for the night. It was a beautiful night out my window. I drifted off as the very bright moon soared across the sky as the train turned back and forth.

Tomorrow our journey will end.

After arriving at the San Francisco Amtrak station, we waited patiently to find out what would happen. We were relieved to find out our bus that was suppose to take us to Oakland would now take us to San Jose. We could definitely live with that.

Yes, Stephen bought himself some dorky glasses with clear frames.

Took about an hour to get to San Jose where we had to wait about 40 minutes for our train.

Our train arrived and away we went towards Los Angeles. We had sleeper rooms for this trip but we would not be sleeping on this train.

Tomorrow evening we depart for home. But first, some time in Hollywood.

Could be worse, but still a pain.

After returning back to the hotel area, we had a late lunch. Then we chilled out in the hotel room for a while. We were all pretty tired and some rest was welcomed.

We traveled out to find some dinner and realized then how crowded the Fisherman’s Wharf area has become. Everything had very long lines and the areas transit was shut down. We walked around a while. Came upon a concert…

We finally decided to pick up a pizza from the place across the street from our hotel and we took it back to our room to eat.

Around 8:30, the boys and I ventured out to walk around and see all the interesting stuff going on. Close to 9:30 we climbed to the top of the parking garage next door and enjoyed a San Francisco fireworks show. They actually had two going on. The exact same show at the exact same time and we could easily see both. It was very impressive!

Now it is time to get packed up and ready to move out and begin the journey home. We leave early in the morning.

We spent a good long time there. Lots to do.

After grabbing a quick lunch, we chilled in the hotel room for a little bit. Then we hit BART to Oakland for an A’s game.

The A’s pulled out a 9th inning win against the Red Sox.

After the game we had fireworks!

It was a late ride back from Oakland…

Got back to the hotel around 12:15am.

Only one more day in San Francisco.

Then we went to the Maritime Historical Park.

We then ran back to the hotel for a few minutes to get ready for our evening. Stephen and I also had a nice pillow fight. Of course, I won.

When we returned to San Francisco, it was late so we caught the Streetcar back to our hotel…

So a long day, but we had fun. More tomorrow!

I woke up early because we gained another hour in Pacific time. We were all up by 6:30 where we again went to eat.

Soon after breakfast we arrived in Reno where we stepped off for a few minutes.

Well, we all almost stepped off…

Back to our rooms to enjoy some nice scenery. Course, Stephen is watching a movie and Michael is playing on Vicky’s iPhone.

Around 11:00 we headed to the lounge to play another game of Monopoly and wait for lunch. We all had burgers.

After lunch, things went fast. We started arriving early at stops and before you know it we were pulling into Emeryville (across the bay from San Francisco) where we got off the train for good with all our luggage. We then boarded a bus for a quick ride to SF.

While everyone else waited to get our bags, I ran to Walgreens to by our MUNI pass. We then boarded a streetcar and went to our hotel. It was nice to finally dump all our luggage.

We then went right next door to In-N-Out Burger for dinner. Then to Walgreens for a few items and back to the room to rest up and prepare for our next four days of San Francisco!

The trained stopped in Denver for about 30 minutes where we got off and walked around. A lot of people got off here to go get on a bus because the reroute was missing some big stops. By the way, they washed the windows right after this pic.

We finally got into breakfast around 9:00. Again, French toast for everyone.

The boys and I once again went to the lounge car to play Monopoly and I also met a guy from my online Amtrak forums (www.amtrakunlimited.com) who happened to be on the same train. We played and visited until lunch.

After lunch we retired to our rooms where everyone else took naps while I caught up on the blog.

For dinner, we all had steak except Michael who had a hot dog.

We arrived into Salt Lake City right around 10:00. We had over an hour there so Stephen and I got off to explore a little while Vicky and Michael went to bed.

We reboarded around 10:45 and turned in for the night. This was to be the best night sleep yet for me.

Soon after breakfast we stopped in Kansas City where we got to step off the train for 20 or so minutes.

After we reboarded, the boys and I went to the lounge and played Monopoly on the iPad.

I won, of course. Then more hanging out in the room.

Because out train was running an hour late, we had time to get lunch on the train. I had a Cuban sandwich and everyone else had a burger.

Soon after lunch, we arrived in Galesburg, Il. This is when we heard the nasty rumor that we would be on a bus from Denver to Salt Lake City due to wildfires in Colorado. I demanded positive thoughts.

Just so happens there is a small rail museum right next to the depot and since we had about about three hours to kill, the boys and I went to check it out.

Stephen and I trekked to a local store to get a few items and it was way HOT. But we survived. After that, we hung out waiting for our next train, the California Zephyr #5. It arrived right on time at 4:18pm.

No one on board knew anything about a bus or a possible reroute. I guess that was good news.

After dinner, I decided to go ahead and take a shower. There is nothing quite like taking a shower on a train moving 79mph. Needless to say, you use the grab bar. After me, the rest of the family showered as well.

By the time we got to Omaha, the news was in (from my online sources). Our train was to be rerouted so there would be no bus for us. While we do miss out on the Rockies, at least we will stay on the train.

I think we all slept better the second night, I know I did.

We ate lunch at a local BBQ joint not too far away.

Our train arrived a little more than one hour late. We boarded and began the train journey.

Our first meal on the train was dinner. I had steak, Vicky had salmon, Stephen had chicken and Michael had a hot dog.

After dinner, we chilled out a while in our rooms before turning in for the night. We did make a stop in La Junta, CO and were able to step off for a few minutes.

Like always, I did not sleep much the first night. To much to watch out the window. Don’t want to miss anything.

Everything is going well. The reroute went off without a hitch and we are back on schedule.

We are now in Galesburg waiting on the California Zephyr. However, we have heard there are problems due to fires. This may involve a bus. Keeping my fingers crossed it works out to stay on the train.

Thursday, June 28th – Drive to Lamy, New Mexico from Amarillo and board Amtrak’s Southwest Chief to Galesburg, Illinois

Friday, June 29th – Arrive Galesburg, Illinois, change trains to Amtrak’s California Zephyr to Emeryville, California

Sunday, July 1st – Arrive Emeryville, board a bus to take us into San Francisco.

Monday, July 2nd – Wednesday, July 4th – Exploring San Francisco

Thursday, July 5th – After a short bus ride from San Francisco to Oakland, we will board Amtrak’s Coast Starlight to Los Angeles. We will arrive in Los Angeles the same evening where we will spend the night.

Friday, July 6th – Spend a little time in Los Angeles, at 6:15pm we will board Amtrak’s Southwest Chief back to Lamy.

Saturday, July 7th – Arrive Lamy and rive back to Amarillo

The last two years, our first train was late which messed up our connection to our second train. My hope and prayer is that this year will not be a repeat and our connections will be just fine.

Finally, while we originally thought he was not going to be able to house sit for us, a change of his schedule will allow our good friend James to once again spend time eating our food and watching our TV while we are gone. Thanks, James.

After breakfast, we just all sat around trying to soak in the train ride. Stephen and I played some checkers.

Soon enough, it was time for an early 11:30 lunch. We all had a hamburger except Michael who went for a hot dog. While we were eating we arrived into Albuquerque. That is a longer service stop and the last stop before ours. We got off the train and hung out a little on the platform. It was hot!

We reboarded and the end was now too close. We packed everything up and waited for our stop. We got the announcement of 10 minutes until Lamy and we headed downstairs to be ready and get off.

We pulled in and got off. Soon enough, we found out about our checked bags. They made it! Amtrak really came through with our complicated routing.

Then, as suddenly as it started, our train adventure ended. We loaded in the truck and drove the four hours back to Amarillo.

Thank you for joining us on this adventure. God willing, we will do another next year.

Our bus arrived on time and we had a short 50 minute ride to Stockton, CA.

In Stockton, we had to wait about 30 minutes for our San Joaquin train to arrive. When it did, fortunately, it was not very crowded and we got to all sit together at a table. We ended up teaching the boys to play Rummy and we all played that to pass the time. We also took a break to eat lunch. That train trip was about four hours.

Our train arrived into  Bakersfield, Ca where we got on another bus. This trip was a little over two hours. We all slept some. We arrived into Los Angles Union Station about two hours before our last train, the Southwest Chief, was to board. So we sat and waited some more. Michael and I walked around the station some…

Finally, our train came backing into the station…

We settled into our rooms. Stephen and I played checkers with an app for my phone. We also saw the place where they filmed some of the Transformers movie and Stephen was all excited…

Then we went to the dining car for a late dinner at 8:15.

Vicky and Stephen both joined me in getting the steak. It was their first time and I think they liked it. Michael had the big hot dog. This was our last dinner on the train for this year.

After dinner, we all pretty much went right to bed. It was dark out already so might as well go to sleep and then get up early when it is light out.

It was a LONG day.

After a quick lunch, we headed over to the Museum of Flight…

We then headed back to the hotel for a bit before heading to our favorite fast food place, Panda Express!

After dinner, back to the hotel to rest and get packed up for the journey home. I found out there was to be a fireworks display across the street from our hotel so we went outside to watch. We could not see too much because of the tall trees, but we saw a little before turning in.

Tomorrow, we start home.

We got up and went to Everett, WA to visit Boeing. We started doing the factory tour. For some reason they do not allow cameras or cell phones so no pictures of that part, but it was really impressive. The assembly building is HUGE. There is one spot we saw where it is the only place you can see a kilometer INSIDE.

They also have a small museum that we checked out.

While in Everett, we stopped at another small museum called the Flying Heritage Museum. It had some old, mostly WWII planes.

We then hit a Panda Express for lunch and headed back to Seattle. We went to the Space Needle next.

And then the Monorail…

After the Monorail, we headed back to our hotel for some down time. It was nice to get some relaxing time in. We left again for a quick dinner and then drove over to a nearby park near Puget Sound…

Then back to the hotel to get to bed early.

One more day in Seattle before we start the journey home. It should be a good one.

When we got off, we walked down the boardwalk and visited the USS Turner Joy. A destroyer.

Then a quick stop at the Naval Station Museum…

After a quick lunch at Subway, we were back on the ferry to Seattle. Michael grabbed a quick nap…

We then went down to Pike’s Market and saw the famous fish market…

After exploring the market, we headed down the street to do the Underground Tour…

After the tour, we got dinner and a local Mexican place. Then boarded the LINK to Safeco Field for the Mariners game. It was an interleague game with the Padres.

We got back on the LINK and headed back to the car and finally back to the hotel. It is late so I am going to sleep. Another early morning tomorrow.

After a quick lunch at a local Burger King, I dropped the family of at Portland’s Union Station and went and returned the rental car. We checked in and had about an hour to wait for out train.

We departed and it took about 3.5 hours to get to Seattle. It was a nice train. Very comfortable.

After detraining, we got our checked bags and walked to the light rail station. We rode the LINK light rail train out to the airport where we got a rental car and checked into our hotel.

We have an early start tomorrow and a long day so my post will probably be really late.

In summary, our train from Lamy to Los Angeles was six hours late which made it 3 hours too late for our connecting train in LA. They took us off our train in San Bernardino and out us on a three hour bus to Bakersfield, CA. We then got on an Amtrak California San Joaquin train for about six hours (coach only) to Martinez, CA. Then we waited two hours for our original connecting train to arrive, the Coast Starlight. We boarded it at 11:00.

We went straight to bed, but got up early and enjoyed the time we did have on that train.

We arrived in Portland, OR around 4:00. We got a rental car and headed straight to the Zoo where we spent a couple of hours.

We then went and checked into our hotel (free nights stay thanks to rewards points!) and then ran and ate some dinner. Decided to go ahead and top off the rental car. Interesting factoid, it is illegal for you to put gas in your own car in the state of Oregon. Guy at the station stopped me right before I was about to to do it. I guess I could have been hauled off by the cops for it.

Tomorrow, a little more time in Portland then off to Seattle.

We had an extended stop here because the police came out to take someone off the train. Not sure what was going on, but it took an extra 30 minutes. So we are looking to arrive in Portland around 4:00.

We boarded last night around 11:00pm. We all went straight to bed. Looking forward to today!

From what I have heard, it sounds like they will take us off the train in San Bernardino and put us on a bus to catch our connecting train. So yippee, a bus.

Our biggest issue right now is making our connection in LA. It is scheduled to depart at 10:15 tomorrow morning but we are currently not scheduled to arrive until 11:15. Nothing like a little stress on vacation.

Wednesday, July 6th – Get off the Coast Starlight in Sacramento, take a bus to Stockton, get on a San Joaquin train to Bakersfield, then off on another bus to Los Angeles. In LA, board the Southwest Chief back to Lamy.

Thursday, July 7th – Arrive back in Lamy and drive back to Amarillo

In case you wondering why the whole train-bus-train-bus ordeal on our return trip, The Southbound Coast Starlight does not arrive in Los Angeles before the Southwest Chief departs, so we have to get off and do this weird routing.

As of right now, nothing is happening that should disrupt this schedule like last year. Does not mean something will not happen, but so far so good.

I also want to publically tell our friend James not to order too many pay-per-view movies this year while he house sits.

I also want to add that our prayers go out to all those affected by the incident that happened to Amtrak’s California Zephyr on Friday.

Around on the Pacific side we went down by the water…

We then grabbed some lunch at Fuddruckers and then headed to the train station. I dropped the family off and then went to return the rental car. I then hopped on a trolley back to the station to await our Surfliner train to Los Angeles.

In a couple of hours we were at Los Angeles Union Station to wait to board the Southwest Chief back to Albuquerque. There was some big photo shoot going on. Someone said it was for a movie, but I don’t know.

We boarded the Southwest Chief and got moved into our rooms. Soon after departure we went to dinner.

After dinner, we were all pretty wiped so we turned down the beds and went to sleep.

Because of time zone shifts, my 6:00 alarm went off on my phone right before it shifted back to 5:00am. So I got up pretty early. Stephen was awake too so we stepped off in Flagstaff where it was really cold.

We all went and grabbed some breakfast in the dining car at 6:30. Then chilled in our rooms. There were only a few stops between Flagstaff and Albuquerque. We took a little time to hand in the lounge car…

Before we knew it, we were getting real close to Albuquerque. But not too close that we could not get one more meal in on the train. So we had a quick lunch as we approached Albuquerque.

We arrived in Albuquerque, collected our checked bags and our car and headed back to Amarillo. We arrived in Amarillo around 6:30.

So, another vacation complete. It was a long time coming. Lots of planning and lots of changed plans. It was a good time and we hope we have the honor to travel again next year.

We rode it down the the Santa Fe station (this is also the station Amtrak uses).

We walked a couple of blocks to the USS Midway and spent a couple of hours checking it out.

After grabbing some lunch, we headed over to the Maritime Museum where we checked out a couple of submarines (one was an old Soviet sub) and some old sailing ships.

Then we went on a harbor tour cruise for an hour…

After grabbing to dinner, we went to Petco Park to watch the Astros take on the Padres.

The Astros won 6-3 in 10 innings. The Astros won one for us. I e-mailed Fox Sports where we were sitting and they said they would get us on. It has been reported to us that we were on TV in Houston THREE times and they mentioned my name. I set the DVR to record. Hopefully we got it.

After the game we took the trolley back to Qualcomm and drove back to out hotel. It is now 12:30 so I am going to bed.

We leave tomorrow from San Diego (on a TRAIN this time) at 3:00. I will post as much as I can during the trip.

We then headed to the Wild Animal Park which is part of the San Diego Zoo.

We then had just enough time to run to Carlsbad and stop in the The Museum of Making Music. We were all not too interested in the displays but had a blast on the hands on stuff…

It was a fun day. I am really looking forward to tomorrow.

We headed out to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Command Museum. Was a small Marine Corps history museum. I am a World War II history buff so I love military museums. My Dad, having been in the Marines, also gave it special meaning to me.

We then headed to Balboa Park to spend the rest of the day checking out the museums there.

They invited us to be in the first group of visitors to try out their new 3D and motion movie theater. It was cool. The seats moved, it blew air in your face, had some tube that would flop around your legs to feel like you were hitting things and also sprayed a bit of water in your face. It is not opened to the public yet but should be very soon.

We then ran by the model railroad museum…

Then finally the Hall of Champions (Sports Museum)…

After that, we went to the hotel for a little and then off to eat Mexican food with the Mazos who are friends from Harding.

This was mostly an indoor day. It will be our only one.

SeaWorld was very cool. Great place to spend a day and plenty to do. Course, food prices are crazy high as well as everything else they sell. We bought the Go San Diego cards so it was included.

We all got up before 6:00 (we will still on Central time). We went to breakfast at 6:30.

We had French toast all around.

After breakfast, we spent the rest of the morning hanging in our rooms.

We got to step off the train for a couple of minutes in San Bernardino…

We arrived at Los Angeles Union Station around 11:00.

We missed our connecting train so we were put on another leaving at 12:25. We boarded and rode the train for an hour to Irvine.

There we transferred to a bus for the trip into San Diego.

We arrived into San Diego Santa Fe Station around 3:30. I left the family waiting in the depot while I hopped on a trolley to pick up the rental car. I got it and swung by and picked them up. We then hit the hotel to unpack and got right back out headed for the San Diego Zoo.

Yes, we are wearing jackets. It is really cool here!

After a late night at the Zoo (they are open till 9:00 during the summer) and a cool bird show, we are now back at the hotel getting ready to turn in for the night.

Due to tracks being washed out near Las Vegas, NV, Amtrak’s trains (#3 & #4) Southwest Chief could not get through. There solution is to stop the Eastbound train in Albuquerque and bus all passengers East to La Junta, CO. They then turned the Eastbound train around and it became the Westbound train. They stopped the Westbound train (the one we were suppose to be on) in La Junta, CO and bused all passengers to Albuquerque, then turned the train to make it the Eastbound train. Since our stop (Lamy, NM) was so close to Albuquerque, we just decided to drive to Albuquerque to catch the train.

The Westbound train we were suppose to be on left Chicago 4 hours late. That means the buses left La Junta late. The train that stopped in Albuquerque and became our Westbound train then sat around in Albuquerque a very long time. We were suppose to depart at 4:45 but the buses were nowhere close.

So we settled in for a 8 hour wait! The family was fantastic with no complaints.

They backed the train into the station around 4:00.

They allowed us to board the train at 4:15 and we also got to eat dinner at 5:30.

Buses started showing up around 6:30 and we finally pulled out of Albuquerque at 8:02pm.

We then hung out in our rooms enjoying being on the train.

Around 9:00, we converted our rooms to beds and everyone went to bed (except me cause I am typing this).

SO, I have now decided just to drive to Albuquerque to catch the train. My biggest issue with that is parking. Not real sure where we can park and how much it is going to cost us. I do know they have no free parking like Lamy.

Will update tomorrow from Albuquerque.

However, I will be missing one of my favorite things in train travel. That is waiting for the train to arrive. I just love sitting at the station in anticipation. Waiting to hear the train horn in the distance and finally seeing the train coming around the bend. There is nothing like that in any other form of transportation.

The train will already be sitting at the station when we get to Albuquerque. So we will miss out on that this year. Going to San Diego we will begin and end the trip on a bus.

Bummer.

Saturday, June 26th – Drive to Lamy, NM and catch the Southwest Chief train to Los Angeles.

Sunday, June 27th – Arrive in Los Angeles and board a Surfliner train headed towards San Diego.

Sunday, June 27 – Friday July 2 – Enjoy San Diego

Friday, July 2nd – Board the Surfliner train back to Los Angeles, in LA, board the Southwest Chief.

Saturday, July 3rd – Arrive back in Lamy and drive home to Amarillo.

Couple of last minute issues. Amtrak called and said due to track work being done, the Surfliner going LA to San Diego will be stopped in Irvine and we will be on a bus the rest of the way. Oh, well.

Second BIG issue is there has apparently been some track washed out East of Lamy and the Southwest Chief will be temporarily rerouted through AMARILLO for a few days. This might sound like good news, but we cannot board the train in Amarillo and we would need our car to be in Lamy when we return. If they cannot get repairs done before Saturday, most likely we will be on a bus from Lamy to Albuquerque. I really hate to miss the experience of waiting on our train to arrive in Lamy. We will see what happens.

I hope to have some little blog posts while aboard the trains and even possibly some video. I will then follow up with daily reports.

We left Amarillo last Sunday after church. We stopped in Denton and ate at one of my favorite places, Fuddruckers.

We then proceeded to our hotel in the Dallas area.

Monday, we headed out to the Ripley’s Museum.

And we also went to the mirror maze.

And finally, the wax museum.

Okay, is it just me or do these two apostles look like Sean Connery and Mel Gibson?

After grabbing some lunch, we went to the Cavanaugh Flight Museum in Addison.

Then on to Medieval Times…

Then back to the hotel for the night.

Tuesday, we parked at a nearby DART light rail station and rode it downtown to Dallas Union Station. We then boarded an Amtrak Train (The Texas Eagle).

We ate lunch in the lounge car.

We arrive in Fort Worth were we got off the Amtrak train and boarded a Trinity Railway Express (TRE) train headed back to Dallas. TRE is a commuter train that travels between Dallas and Fort Worth.

Then, the DART light rail back to our car. We then headed out to dinner in Colleyville with our fiend Caroline and her son Ben. We had a lot of fun and enjoyed catching up.

Then back to the hotel for the night.

Wednesday, we slept in a little. After getting up, we checked out of our hotel. We stopped by Chick-fil-a for breakfast and then drove to the Museum of American Railroad in Dallas.
